StyleSeat Fees Explained: 10 Myths and What You Actually Pay
By Olori Swank · Last updated October 9, 2026
It’s 7:40 on a Thursday night. Your last client is gone, the floor is swept, and you finally open your payouts.
One number is smaller than you expected. Then a regular texts you: “Why did StyleSeat charge me $2.35?” So you open the group chat, and someone swears StyleSeat takes 30% of everything.
Here’s the thing. StyleSeat’s fees are published. But there are several of them, and they usually get talked about as one big blur. So let’s take them apart, one at a time: what each fee is, who pays it, and when it actually applies.
The short version
- The 30% fee is not on everything. It’s the New Client Connection fee: one visit, once per client, never more than $50.
- StyleSeat is one plan: $35 a month, with a promotion currently running at $19.
- Card processing is 2.5% + 30¢ in person and 2.6% + 30¢ for a card on file. It applies only to payments you take through StyleSeat.
- Your client pays a $2.35 booking fee. You don’t.
Myth 1: “StyleSeat takes 30% of everything I make.”
The short answer: No. The 30% is the New Client Connection fee. It applies to one appointment only: the first visit of a client StyleSeat’s marketplace sent you.
Three limits keep it small. It’s capped at $50. It’s charged once per client, ever. And it’s figured on the service price, never on the tip. Clients you bring yourself, through your Instagram or your booking link, don’t trigger it at all.
Here’s what that looks like on a first visit, assuming a 20% tip and before card processing:
| First-visit service | New Client Connection fee | You take home (assuming a 20% tip) |
|---|---|---|
| $45 cut | $13.50 | $40.50 |
| $100 color | $30 | $90 |
| $200 install | $50 (the cap) | $190 |
| $400 extensions | $50 (the cap) | $430 |
So what does it buy? Professionals using New Client Connection averaged $1,904 in first-year revenue from those clients, against $370 in fees. The median was $633. StyleSeat has delivered more than $500M in new-client revenue to pros.
And if you don’t want new clients right now, you can turn New Client Connection off. Your existing book keeps running.
Where the confusion comes from: older StyleSeat pricing, including a free plan that no longer exists, had no $50 cap. Some reviews and competitor pages still describe it.

Myth 2: “StyleSeat has hidden fees.”
The short answer: Every StyleSeat fee is published. There are several, though, and that’s what trips people up.
Here’s an easy way to sort them. Two are fixed: your subscription and, if you add one, your custom website. One scales with what you take by card: processing. The rest only happen when something happens, like a new client, a higher-priced slot or a faster payout.
That last group is the important part. Most of StyleSeat’s fees are tied to money StyleSeat helped you make. You pay StyleSeat more when StyleSeat made you more.
Is StyleSeat a scam? No. It has been shipping since 2011 and has paid out more than $12B to professionals. Every fee is in the table at the end of this article.

Myth 3: “StyleSeat charges me the new-client fee on clients who are already mine.”
The short answer: It shouldn’t, and when it does, you can get the fee reversed. Sometimes a client you know gets tagged as new by mistake. There are two ways to fix it.
- When the request pops up: tap Decline, then I know this client, and verify the client’s phone number.
- If it’s already booked: open the appointment, tap the New Client from StyleSeat tag, then tap Request Correction.
Three other situations look like mistakes, so it helps to know them:
- The referral link. If a client sends a friend through StyleSeat’s referral link, that friend gets 15% off, paid by StyleSeat. That booking counts as a New Client Connection. If the friend found you by word of mouth alone, StyleSeat will refund the fee.
- The delayed fee. If the fee wasn’t collected at the first visit, it’s collected at a later one instead. It’s still charged only once.
- The wandering click. A client who opens your booking link, browses away and then books can get tagged as new. Ask clients to book straight from your link.
Checking tags is one more thing on a busy day. But the fix is in the app, and a wrong tag means the fee comes back.

Myth 4: “StyleSeat charges my clients extra.”
The short answer: Clients pay one StyleSeat fee, $2.35 at booking. Anything else they see comes from settings you control.
The $2.35 booking fee. Your client pays it, not you. StyleSeat’s figure is that it reduces no-shows by over 80%. Here’s how it works when plans change:
- The client cancels: the fee isn’t refunded, even if they cancel well before your late-cancel window.
- You cancel outside your own policy window: StyleSeat refunds the $2.35 to the client’s card within 5 to 10 business days.
- Either of you reschedules: the fee carries over, so the client isn’t charged again.
If a client asks, here’s the easy answer. They owe you nothing for canceling early. The $2.35 stays with StyleSeat to cover running the platform.
Smart Pricing slots. These cost more, and they’re labeled as high-demand times before the client books. A 20% tip is filled in by default on these appointments. The client can change it for an hour after the appointment ends.
Deposits and no-show fees. You set these. You choose the amounts, and you choose whether to charge or waive the fee.

Myth 5: “Smart Pricing is StyleSeat raising my prices to keep the difference.”
The short answer: No. Smart Pricing raises your price on your busiest slots, up to 20%, and most of that is yours. StyleSeat’s fee is 5.5% of the service, capped at $16.50. It comes out before your payout.
Say a $100 color lands on a booked-out Saturday and books at $120. Smart Pricing added $20. StyleSeat’s fee on that appointment is $6.60 at most.
Professionals who use Smart Pricing average $385 a year in extra service revenue, and the top 10% clear $1,000+. StyleSeat’s 5.5% is about $187 of that $385, on average.
You stay in charge of it. You can:
- turn it on for some services and not others,
- mark your regulars as VIPs so they never see it,
- apply it to new clients only,
- remove it from a single appointment, or
- turn it off completely.
This one is for the pro whose book is already full. She doesn’t need more hours. She needs her best hours to pay more.

Myth 6: “StyleSeat used to be free, and now it costs too much.”
The short answer: The free plan is gone. StyleSeat is one plan, $35 a month, with a promotion currently running at $19. New pros get a 21-day trial. During the trial, the New Client Connection, Smart Pricing and booking fees are waived.
The $35 covers online booking, payments and your marketplace listing. It also covers client reminders, email marketing, promotions, a loyalty program, business analytics and review management. Text marketing is built in too. Every pro starts with 500 free texts, once, and after that it’s 1,500 texts for $10. Reminders and booking confirmations don’t use credits.
Many of the scariest numbers online describe the old free plan. If you want the full month-by-month breakdown, see how much StyleSeat costs per month.

Myth 7: “Other booking apps don’t charge for new clients.”
The short answer: The ones with a marketplace do. The ones without a marketplace can’t send you a client.
Booksy charges the same 30% as StyleSeat, but its ceiling is $100, where StyleSeat’s stops at $50. Fresha takes 20% with a cap it doesn’t publish. GlossGenius and Square run no marketplace at all.
| New-client fee | Rate on the first visit | Minimum | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| StyleSeat New Client Connection | 30% | None | $50 |
| Booksy Boost | 30% | $10 | $100 |
| Fresha marketplace new-client fee | 20% | $6 | Not published |
The ceiling matters most on a big ticket. On a $600 balayage, StyleSeat’s fee stops at $50. Booksy’s 30% would be $180, but its ceiling holds it to $100. Fresha’s 20% is $120, unless its unpublished cap lands lower.
If your book is full and you want nobody new, a scheduler with no marketplace can fit fine. It can’t fill an empty chair, though.

Myth 8: “I have to run every payment through StyleSeat.”
The short answer: No. Regular appointments can be paid in cash or any other way you like. Processing fees apply only to payments you take through StyleSeat.
A few features do need StyleSeat Payments turned on:
- New Client Connection first visits,
- Smart Pricing appointments,
- deposits, and
- a no-show and late-cancellation policy.
That’s because each one charges a card, either upfront or after the service.
Go deeper: Do I have to use StyleSeat Payments?
Myth 9: “StyleSeat’s processing fee is 2.75%.” (Or 1.9%.)
The short answer: The standing rate is 2.5% + 30¢ in person and 2.6% + 30¢ for a card on file. Payments run through Stripe.
| How the client pays | Rate | On a $100 service |
|---|---|---|
| Tap to Pay or card reader | 2.5% + 30¢ | $2.80 |
| Card on file | 2.6% + 30¢ | $2.90 |
| Cash or another method outside StyleSeat | No StyleSeat processing fee | $0 |
You may have seen 2.75% on an older StyleSeat page. That’s an old rate. You may also have seen 1.9%. That’s a six-month promotional rate, not the standing one.

Myth 10: “StyleSeat holds onto my money.”
The short answer: Payouts go to your bank automatically. Instant Payout is optional and costs 1.8%.
Instant Payout sends money to your debit card the same day. On a $500 payout, the fee is $9. Here are its limits:
- $50.50 minimum and $1,000 maximum per payout,
- once a day, started before 3 p.m. Pacific,
- available after your first standard payout, and
- paused for 24 hours after you change your bank account.
When a payout looks short, check the appointments in it. A New Client Connection, Smart Pricing or Instant Payout fee is usually the reason.
Chargebacks happen when a client disputes a charge with their bank. StyleSeat tells you right away, and you send evidence from the app. Good evidence includes messages, your cancellation policy, photos and signed forms. The bank decides, and its review often takes 10 to 14 weeks.

The part none of this touches
You didn’t get licensed to read fee tables. You got licensed because you can see a cut before it happens. You can match a lash set to a face, or turn a nervous first-timer into a regular. The money side is the tax on doing that work. It should be quick to understand, so you can get back to the chair.
That’s the whole point of laying it out. Once you know which fee is which, a payout stops being a mystery. It becomes a receipt you can read.

Who StyleSeat is built for
StyleSeat is built for two kinds of pros. One is building her book and wants the marketplace to send her people. StyleSeat runs millions a year in ads to do exactly that. The other is already full and doesn’t want more hours. She wants more money from the ones she works. For her, Smart Pricing is the reason to stay.
Either way, the fees work the same. The fixed ones are small, and the bigger ones show up when StyleSeat made you money.
StyleSeat fees: questions pros ask
Does StyleSeat take 30% of every appointment?
No. StyleSeat’s 30% New Client Connection fee applies only to the first visit of a client its marketplace sent you. It’s capped at $50, charged once per client, and never charged on tips.
Why did StyleSeat charge me $50?
$50 is the cap on the New Client Connection fee. You’ll see it on a new marketplace client’s first visit when the service costs about $167 or more. If that client was already yours, tap the New Client from StyleSeat tag and request a correction.
Does StyleSeat charge clients a fee?
Yes. Clients pay a $2.35 booking fee when they book. It isn’t refunded if the client cancels. It is refunded if the pro cancels outside their own policy window, and it carries over on a reschedule.
How much does StyleSeat cost per month?
StyleSeat costs $35 a month, with a promotion currently running at $19 a month. There’s one plan and a 21-day free trial.
Does StyleSeat charge transaction fees?
Yes, on card payments taken through StyleSeat: 2.5% + 30¢ in person, and 2.6% + 30¢ for a card on file. Cash and other payments taken outside StyleSeat carry no StyleSeat processing fee.
Now the numbers are yours
The next time someone in the group chat says StyleSeat takes 30% of everything, you’ll know the real number. It’s $50 at most, once, for a client you didn’t have. That’s not a tax on your book. It’s what it cost to grow it.
StyleSeat is $35 a month, and right now there’s a promotion at $19. Start your 21-day free trial.
