Why Did StyleSeat Charge a New Client Fee on My Own Client?

Why Did StyleSeat Charge a New Client Fee on My Own Client?

By Olori Swank · Last updated October 9, 2026

She’s been in your chair every six weeks since 2022. You know her kids’ names. So when her appointment shows up tagged “New Client from StyleSeat,” it stings. It feels like someone took credit for your work.

Sometimes that’s a mistake, and you can undo it. Sometimes it’s something else that only looks like a mistake. Here’s how to tell, and what to do either way.

The short answer: The New Client Connection fee is only for clients StyleSeat’s marketplace brought you. If a client you already know gets tagged as new, request a correction. When the tag was wrong, the fee is reversed.

How to fix a wrong tag

There are two ways, depending on when you catch it.

When the request pops up. You’ll see a prompt to accept or decline the new client. Tap Decline, then I know this client. Verify the client’s phone number, and the New Client Connection comes off. You get a few tries to enter the number.

After it’s booked. If the request was accepted automatically, you won’t see that pop-up. Use this instead:

  1. Open the appointment in your calendar.
  2. Tap the New Client from StyleSeat tag.
  3. Tap Request Correction and send the ticket to StyleSeat’s support team.

Three cases that look like mistakes

Not every surprise tag is an error. These three come up most.

The referral link

StyleSeat has a referral program. Your clients can share a referral link to your profile. A friend who books through it gets 15% off, and StyleSeat pays that discount.

That booking counts as a New Client Connection, because StyleSeat’s discount helped bring the friend in. If the friend found you by word of mouth alone, without the referral link, StyleSeat will refund the fee. Use the same Request Correction link, or message support in chat.

The delayed fee

The fee is charged once per client. But if it wasn’t collected at that client’s first visit, it’s collected at a later one instead.

So a client might show up with the fee on their third visit. That doesn’t mean you’re paying again. It means you’re paying the one fee late.

The wandering click

You sent a client your booking link. They tapped it, looked around StyleSeat, then came back and booked. A client who navigates away like that can get tagged as new by accident.

The fix is a small habit. Ask clients to tap your direct link right before they book. Then they should stay on your profile until it’s confirmed.

How to keep it from happening

  • Share your direct booking link everywhere: your bio, your texts, your business cards.
  • Remind clients to book from that link and finish in one go.
  • When a tag pops up on someone you know, decline it right there. It’s faster than fixing it later.
  • Keep phone numbers up to date in your client list, so verification goes smoothly.

What the fee is for, when it’s right

When the tag is correct, the fee is 30% of that first service, capped at $50, once per client. On a $120 color, that’s $36, and you take home $108, assuming a 20% tip. Every visit after the first is yours, with no New Client Connection fee.

That’s a fair trade for a client you didn’t have. It’s not fair for a client you did. That’s why the correction exists.

What this means for you

  • A client you already know shouldn’t carry the fee. Request a correction when it happens.
  • Referral-link bookings carry the fee by design, because StyleSeat paid the friend’s discount.
  • A fee on a later visit is usually the one-time fee, collected late.

Questions pros ask about wrong new-client tags

Why did StyleSeat charge me a new client fee for an existing client?

Usually it’s a tagging mistake, a referral-link booking or a delayed fee. If the client was already yours, tap the New Client from StyleSeat tag on the appointment and request a correction.

Yes. If the client wasn’t new, StyleSeat will refund the New Client Connection fee. Request a correction from the appointment details or message support in chat.
