Why Some Pros Leave StyleSeat — and What We’ve Changed

Last updated September 12, 2026 · By StyleSeat Editorial Team

You’re rinsing out a color when the notification lands. New client booked, and a fee line sits right under it.

Somewhere in the back of your head is a pro from your group chat. She deleted the app over a fee just like it.

Maybe you’ve thought about leaving too. Maybe you already have, and you’re checking whether anything’s actually different. Either way, you deserve a straight answer, not a brochure.

So here it is. Some pros leave over the New Client Connection fee. Some leave because the free plan disappeared and a bill showed up instead. Some leave because they needed help on a Saturday, and support didn’t open until Monday. All three are real, and all three get answered below — with numbers, not spin.

The short version

  • The New Client Connection fee is 30% of one appointment, capped at $50. It’s charged once per client, only after she’s actually paid you.
  • The free plan is gone. StyleSeat is one plan now — $35 a month, with a $19 promotion currently running. Every pro can turn New Client Connection or Smart Pricing off.
  • Our chat support is available 24/7. Phone and email support are available Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Pacific.
  • Pros using New Client Connection kept an average of $1,534 net in their first year, after the fee. Pros using Smart Pricing added another $385 on average, and the busiest tenth cleared over $1,000.

The biggest fee Pros talk about

When a pro calls StyleSeat expensive, she usually means one charge. New Client Connection — the fee for a client the marketplace found her.

Here’s the scoop. It’s 30% of that first appointment’s service cost. It stops at $50, no matter how big the ticket is. It only ever applies once per client — every appointment after that is fee-free, for good. It’s charged after the appointment happens, never up front. And you can turn it off completely, any time you want.

Run it on an actual ticket. A $150 color brings a $45 fee, under the cap. With a 20% tip folded in, you take home $135. A $200 service hits the $50 ceiling instead, and you still keep $190 once the tip lands.

Nobody enjoys paying a fee. But this one only shows up for a client who wasn’t already yours.

Here’s how that ceiling stacks up against the rest of the category:

Rate on the first visitCeiling
StyleSeat New Client Connection30%$50
Booksy Boost30%$100 (with a $10 minimum)
Fresha marketplace fee20%Undisclosed until you subscribe
Verified from each company’s own pricing and help-center pages, 2026.

On a $600 service, StyleSeat’s fee still stops at $50. Booksy’s stops at $100. Fresha won’t tell you its cap until you’ve already signed up.

We used to have a free tier

Some of the anger at StyleSeat is really anger at a plan that doesn’t exist anymore. StyleSeat used to offer a free plan. If you left years ago, that’s probably the one you remember.

That plan is retired, and it’s closed to new pros for good. Today there’s one plan: $35 a month, with a promotion currently running at $19. Every new pro gets a 21-day trial. New Client Connection and Smart Pricing fees are waived the whole time you’re trying it out.

What that $35 covers isn’t just scheduling. Email and text marketing, client reminders, a booking assistant, and business analytics all ride along in the price. So do a loyalty program and review management. Text marketing starts you off with 500 free texts. After that, you buy more only as you need them — no separate monthly bill for it.

If the sting is really “I remember this being free,” that’s a fair feeling. Our fees help us continue to improve the platform, offer customer support and make sure you are able to run and grow your business as smoothly as possible.

You may have wanted phone support

Previously we did not offer phone support, which we know was frustrating to some. We are pleased that we now offer phone support Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Pacific. We have also extended chat support to be available 24/7. Email support is availble 7 days a week 9 to 5 Pacific.

Our processing fee was too high

For Pros on the former Basic plan we used to charge 3% in processing fee. We sunset this plan and now offer 2.5% + $.30 which beats just about every competitor and we’re proud to extend this to our community

What the fee actually bought, on average

Here’s the part most complaints skip: what these two fees gave back last year, measured, not modeled.

Pros who booked at least one New Client Connection appointment kept real money from it. In their first year, that averaged $1,904 in service revenue from those clients. After an average $370 in fees, that’s a net of roughly $1,534 for the average pro.

Pros using Smart Pricing added an average of $385 more. The busiest tenth of them cleared over $1,000 from it, on top of everything the subscription already includes.

Neither number is a promise. A full book won’t feel that benefit the way an open one does. That’s a fair exception — the fee only fires when the marketplace actually sends you someone.

We have simplified our fees

Two things changed that matter here. Our own help center used to describe the fee cap inconsistently — one article left out the $50 ceiling entirely. Both articles now say the same thing: 30%, capped at $50, once per client.

The plan itself changed too. There’s no free version with looser rules sitting next to a paid one anymore. Just one structure, with capped fees and an opt-out you control. If StyleSeat let you down before, you’d be looking at a different platform today.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some stylists leaving StyleSeat?

The three reasons that come up most: the New Client Connection fee, the end of the old free plan, and support hours that stop at 5 p.m. Pacific on weekdays. Each one is real, and each is explained above with the actual numbers.

What are the most common StyleSeat complaints?

The New Client Connection fee, confusion about the move from a free plan to a paid one, and support hours that don’t cover nights or weekends. Our extended customer service hours and channels address these issues.

Does StyleSeat still have a free plan?

No. That plan closed to new pros and isn’t coming back. Today there’s one plan, $35 a month, with a $19 promotion currently running and a 21-day trial where New Client Connection and Smart Pricing fees are waived.

Can I turn off New Client Connection or Smart Pricing?

Yes, any time. Both are tools you opt into, not requirements of using StyleSeat.

What hours does StyleSeat support cover?

We are pleased that we now offer phone support Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Pacific. We have also extended chat support to be available 24/7. Email support is available 7 days a week 9 to 5 Pacific.

Leaving is sometimes the right call. A cheaper scheduler could be a better option for a pro who doesn’t want a marketplace at all.

But we’ve gotten better, and we’re launching improvements every day. If you’re thinking about it we hope you’ll give us another try, and we hope to earn your partnership!
