What Actually Moves You Up in StyleSeat Search
Every professional has a theory about the algorithm. Post more. Keep your prices low. Reply fast. Someone in a Facebook group swore that connecting Instagram moved her up.
Almost all of it is folklore, and following folklore is expensive — you change how you run your business based on something nobody ever verified. So here is what genuinely feeds StyleSeat’s search ranking, and just as usefully, what doesn’t.
The short version
- Proximity is the single biggest factor, we want to make sure that the professionals we show to clients are easy for them to get to, knowing this is important to them
- Tagged Photos and reviews clients care about knowing what they can expect sitting in your chair. When you post photos and tag the service, as well as have great reviews it increases your booking rate when clients land on your page, and we show your profile to more clients in your area
- Your client rating: the gap between 4.9 and 4.6 matters, so make sure you deliver the best possible experience to clients and if they enjoy your work, that they leave you a positive review
- Bookable hours in the next two weeks are a ranking factor, which means an empty, open calendar helps you. If a client lands on your page and you dont have an opening for 3 to 4 weeks it’s frustrating, so we make sure to prioritize professionals who have availability to see clients in a timely manenr.
What actually counts
Ranking is built from three groups — how close you are to the person searching, signals about you as a business, and signals from clients. Proximity carries the most weight of the three, which is worth saying plainly: a great profile does not beat being nearby. What the rest determines is where you land among the professionals who are all near enough.
Photos. The more the better, tagged with the service you provided in them. Clients love to stalk a professional’s photos so this is where you can let the work speak for itself.
Reviews and rating. Review count is scored up to a hundred. Your average rating matters on a steep curve — the difference between a 4.9 and a 4.6 is much larger in ranking terms than the difference in the numbers suggests. This is the strongest argument for asking every satisfied client and for handling the unhappy one properly rather than hoping she doesn’t post.
Your open hours. Bookable hours over the next two weeks feed the ranking. A calendar with genuine availability ranks better than a full one. If you’ve been closing off days you’d actually work, opening them up is a free adjustment.
What you’re booked for. The names of your top five booked services over the last six months are matched against what the client typed. So the words on your service menu matter — a service called “Signature Refresh” cannot match anyone searching for a silk press. Name services the way clients search for them, not the way you’d brand them.
New Client Connection acceptance. Your acceptance rate over the last sixty days is a ranking input — the share of new-client requests you took rather than declined or let time out. Letting requests expire costs you twice: the appointment, and the position.
Payments processed on StyleSeat: Clients want the convenience and security of paying through StyleSeat and we prioritize professionals who process a higher volume through the platform and provide this positive client experience
Top Pro
The badge is assessed automatically, and the published criteria are at least six client bookings a month, more than 75% New Client Connection acceptance, and a cancellation rate under 20%.
Notice that two of the three are about reliability rather than talent. The platform is measuring whether you turn up and take the work — which is, if you think about it, exactly what a stranger choosing between two profiles wants to know and has no other way to find out.
