We spoke with StyleSeat<\/a> hair color experts Susan Williams<\/a> and Brian Andrew <\/a>about going for bright, bold shades, as well as lower maintenance, lived-in looks. Whatever your blonde ambition might be, we\u2019ve got the best ideas about the most requested looks of the moment and tips on how to care for blonde hair.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Book a Hair Color Consultation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, it\u2019s important to have a pre-appointment consultation, where the client and stylist can talk through \u2013 either in-person or virtually \u2014 expectations for the final look. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams likes to evaluate an individual\u2019s lifestyle via a new client form, saying \u201cIt has you describe what’s your regular lifestyle, and do you wear [your hair] up or down a lot? Do you always exercise and shower and style it? Do you just let [your hair] air-dry? Do you put it up in a messy bun all the time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew agrees, saying, \u201cIt’s always best to do a consultation because working with clients’ hair. If you don’t know what they’ve previously done to their hair, you need to see the hair in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blonde Pixie<\/h2>\n\n\n
\n
\"blonde<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cI do a lot of short, platinum pixies because I must say this is the first time in a long time that, doing ethnic hair and doing that high level blonde, we have a product that really works for us. I’m using Blonde Solutions<\/a>,\u201d explains Andrew about this glamorous look he created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teasy Blonde Lights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Teasy lights involve teasing the hair prior to applying color and then foils are used. Williams says, \u201cThis is an example of gently touched up <\/a>teasy lights over four months grown-out balayage<\/a>. Very natural looking, but brighter and blended!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platinum Blonde Pixie<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Bright white hair is \u201ctrending a lot now where I see a lot of the clients and a lot of the new clients that I have, they like pixies,\u201d says Andrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natural-Looking Blonde Hair <\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Williams \u201cbrightened a little more around the face to enhance her natural look and not feel as gray<\/a>.\u201d She says, \u201cThis is also what it could look like if you want to try a little color without committing,\u201d To get this blonde hair color, Williams recommends applying six to 10 \u201clittle baby foils\u201d around the hairline so that \u201cit kind of drapes down behind the ear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintaining Blonde Hair Takes Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Blonde hair requires consistent maintenance, according to Andrew. \u201cWhat I usually tell my clients when they first visit the salon is that I would like to see you for two rapid visits right after. We shampoo, we treat the hair,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen they’re going to bed at night, always keep the hair covered. Always have moisture inside the hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep Your Blonde Hair Moisturized<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cMoisture is one of the best [maintenance methods] for blondes, because blonde is a dry color and you must always add moisture to the hair,\u201d says Andrew. Seal in moisture with an oil like shea butter, castor oil, or avocado oil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI always tell everybody with natural hair, coloring hair is a commitment,\u201d adds Andrew,  \u201cYou cannot say you’re going to get this color today and do not moisturize the hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go Blonde With Babylights<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Willams says Babylights<\/a> are a good way to take a step towards going blonde. \u201cEvery time I’ve done six foils on someone in the front, I call them face-framing foils, they come back and are like, \u2018Oh, I just want to try a little more. Or maybe it’s going into summer. Let’s just do a little more.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolder, Blonde Balayage<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This look is \u201ctwo-thirds blonde with bolder balayage pieces, and her goal is a three to four months easy growth and touch-up with face-framing foils at her next appointment to become one-third blonde (more brunette than blonde),\u201d says Williams. A partial balayage<\/a> might be the right choice for her, requiring fewer touch-ups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Hair Goes Blonde Easier<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

While most stylists agree, especially for natural hair, you need to be patient, shorter cuts can go bright fast, notes Andrew. \u201cIf the person has a really low haircut and you really don’t have anything to cut off, you can go straight into the platinum blonde, just like that,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blonder Babylights <\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This \u201cshorter bob with a blonder focus\u201d Williams created will grow out softly. She explains, \u201cI used Babylights for a softer grow out line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treat Your Blonde At Home With Care<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

For fine hair, you\u2019re going to want to be careful about the shampoo<\/a> and conditioner you use, says Williams. \u201cBe sure if you use something that’s really clarifying, or the pH is really strong to open the cuticle, then you’re going to be taking out too much of that color,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hair color professional also believes professional brands and color-specific shampoos and conditioners are much more effective in maintaining blonde hair color<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams says, \u201cSomeone told me an analogy; \u2018If you bought a pair of Seven [for all Mankind] jeans, would you wash them with a bar of soap?\u2019\u201d Based on all of the expert advice we\u2019ve learned here, our best guess is \u201cno!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
