Your last client came in for a fill and left with a full set, because her old tips were lifting and you weren’t going to send her out like that. So you soaked off and rebuilt. Then she asked for the little chrome French on the ring fingers, and you did that too, because it takes you eleven minutes and it makes her whole week.

You charged her the fill price. $65. She tipped $15 and said she’d send her sister.

That appointment ran two hours and forty minutes — which is the thing nobody tells nail techs about nail salon prices. The problem usually isn’t the number on your menu. It’s that the menu is priced by service name when your business runs on chair time.

Short version

Cost per billable hour = fixed monthly costs ÷ hours you can actually fill. Here, $1,130 across 100 filled hours is $11.30 an hour before you’ve paid yourself.

Add the rate you want to keep. To keep $50 an hour you must bill $61.30 — making a two-and-a-half-hour gel-X set about $175 with product in.

Charge for removal. A 30-minute soak-off given away three times a week is $368 a month, roughly $4,400 a year.

Art is time, not generosity. Forty-five unbilled minutes is $46 off every set.

Nail salon prices start with the hours you can bill, not the hours you’re open

Almost every nail pricing problem traces back to one missing number: cost per billable hour. Not per day, not per set. Per hour of client actually sitting at your table.

Start with the money that leaves whether you work or not. These are placeholders — swap in your own. Rent $900, booking and payments software $35, restock not tied to one client $120, license and insurance $30, phone and reader $45. That’s $1,130 a month.

Now, you may be at your table forty hours a week, but you are not billing forty. Between prep, sanitizing and the two-hour hole on Tuesday, twenty-five billable hours a week is a decent book — 100 billable hours a month.

$1,130 ÷ 100 = $11.30 an hour. That’s your floor: rent paid, you paid nothing. Add what you want to earn — target $50 an hour and your billing rate is $61.30. Then add the product that service eats: tips, builder gel, base and top, chrome. Say $18 on a full set.

So a two-and-a-half-hour gel-X set: 2.5 × $61.30 = $153.25, plus $18 = $171.25. Round to $175. Run it backwards, because a formula you haven’t reversed is a guess: forty of those sets fills 100 hours, 40 × $175 = $7,000, minus $720 of product and $1,130 of fixed costs leaves $5,150 — your $5,000 target plus $150.

What each service must cost, by chair time and target rate

Service (chair time)

Keep $40/hr
(bill $51.30)

Keep $50/hr
(bill $61.30)

Keep $60/hr
(bill $71.30)

Soak-off only — 30 min

$26

$31

$36

Gel manicure — 1 hr

$51

$61

$71

Gel fill, simple art — 1.5 hr

$77

$92

$107

Acrylic full set — 2 hr

$103

$123

$143

Gel-X set, intricate art — 2.5 hr

$128

$153

$178

Structured gel set + soak-off — 3 hr

$154

$184

$214

Chair-time pricing at three target hourly rates, on $1,130/month fixed costs across 100 billable hours ($11.30/hr). Product not included — add yours per service. Inputs illustrative; replace with your own. At $61.30 an hour that’s $31. Give it away three times a week and you hand over about $368 a month, roughly $4,400 a year. Put “soak-off, foreign product: $35” on the menu and waive it for your regulars if you like — waiving a priced service is a gift, forgetting to price it is a leak.

Art. A chrome French, an ombré fade, florals on two accent nails — forty-five minutes of that on top of a set is $46. Not a tip-worthy extra. Forty-six dollars. Tier it by added time, roughly 15, 30 and 45 minutes, and book the appointment for the length it really takes, so your 6:00 isn’t waiting in her car.

The break-even math on booth rent is this same shape one level up, and when you’re ready to move these numbers on clients you already have, there’s a script for raising your prices.

The part of this job the math can’t see

You have a client whose apex you’ve been correcting for eight months, and last week you looked at her hands under the lamp and the structure was finally right — even, strong, sitting exactly where it belongs. Nobody clapped. She didn’t notice. You did.

You have a drawer of chrome powders you bought with your own money because a girl sent you an inspo photo and you wanted to be the person who could do it. You learned e-file safety on YouTube at midnight. You can hear a lifting corner. That’s what people are paying for — and undercharging fills your book with the appointments that pay least.

Filled hours and paid Saturdays

Look at the formula again: the denominator does most of the work. Raise your rate and you earn more per set. Fill more hours and you earn more, full stop. StyleSeat supports both.

It buys the demand. StyleSeat spends millions of dollars a year advertising pros on Google, Meta and Apple, and the marketplace takes 74M+ visits a year. When a new client arrives that way, New Client Connection charges 30% of that first appointment’s service cost, capped at $50, once per client and never again, after the service. On your $175 set, 30% would be $52.50, so the cap applies: you pay $50, keep $125, and with a 20% tip take home $160. Every set she books after that costs you nothing. If that client comes back a second time, you get $210, combined these appointments netted you $335, and you only paid $50 or 15%. This is a great marketing cost to revenue ratio, and it gets better every time that client returns. Top Pros using New Client Connection see about $9,800 a year in new-client revenue.

And it bundles the marketing other platforms sell separately. Premium is $35/month standing, currently promoted at $19/month, and that price includes email and text marketing, client reminders, an automated booking assistant, business analytics, promotions, loyalty, an AI social post builder and review management. GlossGenius charges $56 a month billed monthly for Gold, its tier with advanced analytics; Vagaro sells email and text marketing as paid add-ons on top of its $23.99 base.

One feature speaks straight to a nail tech’s calendar. Smart Pricing raises prices on algorithmically identified high-demand slots by up to 50%, charging 5.5% of the service cost capped at $16.50. You enable it per service and can exempt VIPs, so the regular of three years never sees a Saturday surcharge. Your $175 set at a 30% peak uplift prices at $227.50; the fee is $12.51; you net $214.99 for the same two and a half hours, about $40 more. StyleSeat measures the uplift at +$7,200 a year — a raise on your busiest hours only, which is where a raise belongs. See what the $19 promotion covers.

Who this isn’t built for

If you run a shop with four techs on commission splits, a payroll to file and inventory you count by the bottle, Mangomint and Boulevard specialize in exactly that and they’re good at it. StyleSeat supports staff calendars today at no extra cost, and there’s a small-salon tier in beta — but splits, payroll and stock levels are not its game.

If you’re solo at a table and what stands between you and $5,000 a month is empty Tuesday afternoons rather than messy admin, a scheduler alone can’t fix that. GlossGenius and Square have no marketplace, so they can’t send you a client.

Questions nail techs actually ask

How much should I charge for a gel-X full set?

Price it by chair time, not service name. Divide monthly fixed costs by the hours you can genuinely fill to get cost per billable hour, add the rate you want to keep, multiply by the appointment’s real length, then add product. With $1,130 of fixed costs across 100 billable hours ($11.30/hr) and a $50/hr target, a two-and-a-half-hour gel-X set must bill $153.25 in labor plus about $18 in product — roughly $175.

Should I charge for soak-off and removal?

Yes — removal is billable chair time. A 30-minute soak-off of someone else’s product is worth about $31 at a $61.30 hourly billing rate, and giving it away three times a week costs roughly $368 a month, about $4,400 a year. Price it on your menu, say $35 for foreign-product removal, and waive it for your own clients if you choose.

How do I charge for nail art without scaring clients off?

Charge for nail art in time tiers rather than by design. Forty-five minutes of hand-painted art is worth $46 at a $61.30 hourly billing rate, so build three tiers at roughly 15, 30 and 45 added minutes of chair time, and book the appointment for its true length. Clients accept a published art tier far more easily than a surprise number at checkout.

Can I charge more for Saturdays without losing my regulars?

Yes. StyleSeat’s Smart Pricing raises prices on algorithmically identified high-demand slots by up to 50% and charges 5.5% of the service cost, capped at $16.50. It’s pro-customizable, enabled per service, and VIPs can be exempted so long-standing regulars never see the increase. On a $175 set at a 30% peak uplift the price is $227.50, the fee is $12.51, and you net $214.99. StyleSeat measures the annual uplift at +$7,200.

Start with five appointments

Time your next five appointments, table to table, soak-off and art included, and run them against the chart. Most techs find one service — usually the fill that keeps turning into a rebuild — that’s been quietly funding everything else, and fixing that one line is the whole raise. Then the better question arrives: not how to earn more per set, but how to fill the Tuesdays.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[
{"@type":"Question","name":"How much should I charge for a gel-X full set?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Price it by chair time, not service name.
